Philippine bananas ready to be exported to US
Officials of the Department of Agriculture confirmed that the United States (US) will finally get to taste Philippine bananas exported by multinational company Dole Philippines. The fruit giant confirmed that bananas from Mindanao would “soon” make it to the shores of mainland US as phytosanitary tests have now been completed.
This is the first time that Philippine bananas will be exported to the US, and given that the geographical location of the US is further away from the Philippines than the other traditional banana markets, discussion on freight costs are currently underway. “We have to make sure that our freight is competitive,” said Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala.
Secretary Alcala is optimistic about how the fruit will fare in the US market. “Our bananas are better-tasting and more competitive,” he said. Dole Philippines also currently exports Philippine fruits, such as bananas and pineapples, to other Asian countries such as Japan.

DTI: No more expiry dates for gift vouchers, cards
The Department of Trade and Industry has released an advisory stating that all gift vouchers or cards issued after June 30, 2012 should be considered redeemable until used by their holder. “Starting 01 July 2012, all suppliers, issuers, distributors and sellers are prohibited to issue and/or sell gift certificates/check/cards with an expiry date,” said the DTI on their website.
As the gift vouchers or cards are an instrument which “represents value held in trust by the issuer/supplier/distributor,” the DTI saw fit to regulate their use in order to help protect the consumers and their money.
The order also states that all holders of gift checks, certificates, or cards which expire after June 30 are entitled to a replacement, after being revalidated by the supplier. The only exceptions to the order are vouchers or cards issued under awards, loyalty, or promotional programs.
